MEDIUM VOLTAGE SWITCHGEARS: TYPES, COMPONENTS AND APPLICATIONS

The medium voltage switchgear is a critical component of electrical power systems, used to control and protect electrical equipment and circuits in the voltage range of 1kV to 36kV. It typically consists of circuit breakers, disconnectors, fuses, relays, and other accessories, all housed within an enclosure.

There are several types of medium voltage switchgear, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. These types include:

  • Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS): This is the most common type of medium voltage switchgear, using air as the insulation medium between active parts. AIS is relatively simple and reliable but requires a large installation footprint due to its size.
  • Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS): In GIS, the active parts are insulated with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas, which is a highly effective insulator. GIS occupies less space than AIS but is more expensive and requires more maintenance.
  • Hybrid Switchgear: This type combines the advantages of AIS and GIS. It uses a combination of air and SF6 gas for insulation, making it more compact than AIS and more reliable than GIS.

Components of medium voltage switchgear include:

  • Circuit Breakers: Devices that interrupt the flow of electric current in a circuit. They are designed to protect electrical equipment and prevent damage from overcurrents, short circuits, and other electrical faults.
  • Disconnectors: Used to isolate parts of the electrical system for maintenance or repair. They are often used in conjunction with circuit breakers and other protective devices.
  • Fuses: Devices that protect electrical equipment by interrupting the current flow when it exceeds a certain level. They are designed to protect against overcurrents and short circuits.
  • Relays: Devices that control the electrical system and activate protective devices when necessary. They are used to detect faults and ensure the safe and reliable operation of the system.

Medium voltage switchgear is used in a wide range of applications, including:

  • Power distribution: Used to distribute electrical power from high voltage transmission lines to low voltage distribution networks.
  • Aplicaciones industriales: La celda de media tensión se utiliza en diversas aplicaciones industriales, como minería, petróleo y gas, y fabricación.
  • Renewable energy: Used to connect renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power to the electrical grid.

In summary, medium voltage switchgear is an essential component of electrical power systems used to control and protect electrical equipment and distribution networks.
